Il mondo in cui viviamo si sta digitalizzando sempre più. L’arrivo del Covid, infatti, non ha fatto altro che accelerare questo processo per quasi tutte le industrie. Prima fra tutte quella della musica, che già da un paio di anni aveva iniziato questo percorso. Purtroppo però, digitale non significa sostenibile e anche l’industria della musica sta avendo un impatto pesante sull’ambiente.
Secondo quanto diffuso da FIMI (Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana), la spinta digitale sulla musica, vista nel 2020, continua anche nel nuovo anno e con essa i ricavi totali del settore: il primo semestre del 2021 registra infatti un +41% nel numero di abbonamenti effettuati e un +34% in termini di volume di mercato della musica registrata.
In particolare, Spotify e Apple Music sono le due piattaforme che stanno dominando il mercato con una quota di abbonati, rispettivamente, del 32% e del 16%. Entrambe queste big acquisiscono continuamente piccole aziende e startup del settore per fare in modo di offrire servizi sempre più completi e personalizzati.
L’impatto della musica sull’ambiente
Numeri da capogiro per l’industria musicale in termini di crescita e sviluppo ma tutto ciò si ripercuote anche sull’ambiente.
“Quindi anche ascoltare la musica inquina?”
Si e anche qui i numeri sono a dir poco impressionanti. Prendiamo come esempio gli Stati Uniti che, da soli, emettono ogni anno una quantità di gas serra dovuta all’intrattenimento che duplica addirittura quanto prodotto da tutto il mondo nei primi anni 2000.
Abbiamo ripreso questi numeri grazie ad uno studio effettuato dai due centri universitari di Oslo e Glasgow. Le due università hanno portato a termine una ricerca e indagare sull’effettivo impatto ambientale della musica digitale, ovvero in streaming.
Per capire meglio l’impatto ambientale della musica nel corso della storia possiamo dare uno sguardo all’infografica. Da una parte abbiamo il tipo di tecnologia musicale in un dato periodo storico e dall’altra la relativa quantità di gas emessi ogni anno.

I numeri circa l’inquinamento da gas, rispetto ai giorni nostri, sono dovuti ovviamente all’eccessivo consumo energetico dei server. I servizi di streaming, infatti, si appoggiano a potenti server che necessitano di una quantità di energia elettrica enorme. A sua volta, l’energia viene spesso ricavata, come tutti sappiamo, da combustibili fossili che continuano ad inquinare l’aria aumentando l’effetto serra. Di questo passo, si ipotizza che Internet possa arrivare a consumare circa un quinto dell’intera elettricità del mondo nel 2030.
Lo stesso professore universitario del centro di Oslo ha dichiarato:
“Dalla nostra ricerca emerge un quadro estremamente sconcertante quando pensiamo all’energia usata per l’ascolto della musica online. La memorizzazione e l’elaborazione di musica online usa un’enorme quantità di risorse ed energia, e questo ha un fortissimo impatto sull’ambiente”
Da un lato, l’evoluzione della musica e della tecnologia hanno permesso di ridurre drasticamente l’uso di materiali difficili da riciclare come plastica, alluminio e policarbonato. Dall’altro, le nuove tecnologie sono le stesse che ci hanno portato a consumare in maniera eccessiva grosse fonti di energia, comportando un inquinamento ambientale sempre maggiore.
Insomma, ci sono ancora i nostalgici della qualità sonora del vinile, e chissà che non torneremo a comprare vinili per salvare l’ambiente.
