La storia, scritta durante il lockdown, narra di 25 bambini sopravvissuti ai campi di sterminio tedeschi nel corso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, presi in affidamento da una serie di educatrici presso un grande cottage a Lingfield, donato da un ricco possidente ebreo. La vicenda è frutto di un’assidua ricerca da parte dell’autrice che si spinge fino al Museo dell’Olocausto di Washington, dove trova gli appunti della direttrice della Casa, Alice, e delle sue collaboratrici, tra le quali la figlia di Sigmund Freud, Anna. All’interno degli appunti, sono riportati i comportamenti e gli eventi strani, di cui sono protagonisti gli stessi bambini, e i vani e numerosi tentativi di ricondurli alla normalità. Le donne erano consapevoli del fatto che i bambini non potevano essere trattati come tali, a causa dell’orrore che avevano vissuto, privati della loro infanzia e della loro spensieratezza: spesso avevano difficoltà nel rispondere alle loro azioni. Avevano un totale senso di rifiuto e mancanza di fiducia: “rubavano quando gli veniva offerto del cibo o si rifiutavano di entrare nella stanza dei giochi, ma allo stesso tempo dimostravano una voglia intrinseca di affidarsi e di innescare una relazione con gli altri”, spiega l’autrice.
