Comete intervista Mario Lentano sulla vicenda che segnò la fine della monarchia a Roma
Il giorno sabato 14 maggio si è tenuta la seconda giornata di “Libri in Reggia”, organizzato dal Liceo Quinto Orazio Flacco in collaborazione con il Comune e la Facoltà di Agraria di Portici. Olga Cirillo, insegnante di Latino e Greco nel Liceo di Portici, ha presentato Mario Lentano, professore di Letteratura latina all’Università di Siena, e il suo libro “Lucrezia” (Carocci ed.). Il docente ha narrato in maniera scoppiettante e stupefacente la vicenda del libro, soffermandosi anche su dei punti in particolare. Di seguito, un passaggio dell’interessante introduzione:
“Siamo alla fine del VI secolo a.C.; ci troviamo nel periodo monarchico della storia romana. A Roma il sovrano è Tarquinio il Superbo, che ha bisogno di soldi dopo aver depauperato le casse pubbliche per la costruzione di alcune opere pubbliche, tra cui la Cloaca Massima, e per questo motivo decide di assediare la ricca città di Ardea. Una sera i familiari del re e altri aristocratici discutono della fedeltà delle loro donne e del loro comportamento: nella mentalità romana le donne sono delle mine vaganti, ma ognuno si vanta della fedeltà della propria moglie; decidono così di andarle a trovare e quando giungono a Roma le colgono a bere il vino, che sciogliendo i freni inibitori facilitava il tradimento, e a festeggiare; infine giungono a Collatia dove trovano Lucrezia a tessere la lana con le sue ancelle. Il figlio di Tarquinio il Superbo, Sesto Tarquinio, essendo figlio di un tiranno, vede di cattivo occhio la fedeltà della donna e decide che debba essere sua. Così il giorno dopo, Tarquinio Sesto si reca a casa di Lucrezia con il suo schiavo e nel cuore della notte minaccia di ucciderla e di farla trovare con il suo schiavo, un gesto infamante perché nella percezione romana per una donna commettere adulterio con uno schiavo era qualcosa di assolutamente degradante; così Lucrezia cede al ricatto, Tarquinio la violenta e si ritira nell’accampamento. Il giorno dopo Lucrezia racconta l’accaduto a suo marito; dopo ciò lei si suiciderà per la vergogna e la sua storia verrà raccontata dalle madri romane alle figlie.”
Il professore Lentano ha poi proseguito spiegando ulteriori tematiche del libro: “La prima riguarda il fatto che la donna fosse sotto totale controllo dell’uomo, infatti le tre categorie di persone che potevano essere controllate da un tutore erano: i minori di 25 anni, i pazzi e le donne; infatti il gesto di accompagnare la donna all’altare, presente ancora oggi ai matrimoni, è un gesto tremendo perché indica che lei è un essere così pericoloso da dover essere tenuto sotto controllo. La seconda tematica riguarda la purezza di sangue, un tema molto importante nella società romana e che si collega al suicidio di Lucrezia, la quale compie questo atto perché il suo sangue è stato sporcato da qualcosa, a livello biologico, che è venuto da un altro uomo. Inoltre gli antichi pensavano che il mestruo che non esce più durante la gravidanza (quel sangue sporco, non più puro) sia destinato a dare vita al bambino, in caso di gravidanza; secondo tutto questo ragionamento la funzione sociale di Lucrezia, cioè quella di partorire, viene meno e pertanto lei in questo senso non può più assolvere alla sua funzione.”
Quindi, il professor Lentano si è poi disponibile per rispondere alle nostre domande:
“Innanzitutto come reputa questa iniziativa proposta dalla scuola per questo 1° Salone del Libro?”
“La reputo molto interessante, proprio per il fatto che è stata organizzata da una scuola; mi sembra proprio una cosa bellissima che dei ragazzi, invece di essere semplicemente degli ospiti di qualche cosa organizzata da altri, siano fra i protagonisti di ciò; inoltre speriamo che questo sia soltanto il primo di una lunga serie di eventi del genere.”
“Perché parlare proprio del mito di Lucrezia?”
“Parlo del mito di Lucrezia perché secondo me è una storia molto interessante, per le ragioni che abbiamo provato sinteticamente a riassumere adesso: fa capire tante cose sulla condizione della donna nel mondo antico, su cosa significa uccidersi, su cosa significa diventare madri e anche altro di cui oggi non abbiamo avuto il tempo di parlare, ad esempio che cosa significa il controllo maschile sul corpo e sulla vita delle donne; intorno a questa storia apparentemente semplice o persino banale, in realtà si addensano una serie di questioni culturali importanti.”
“Proprio a proposito della figura maschile, il mito di Lucrezia nelle epoche successive come viene percepito e che tipo di modello dà?”
“In realtà, come dite voi, questa storia continua ad essere raccontata anche nei secoli successivi, fino quasi alle soglie dell’età moderna; anzi, ritratti di Lucrezia vengono esposti nelle camere da letto delle nobildonne anche in epoca rinascimentale e moderna, perché rappresentano una specie di monito; siccome il valore della fedeltà coniugale non è un valore legato soltanto al mondo antico (ma evidentemente ha continuato ad essere considerato il dovere di ogni donna sostanzialmente fino ai giorni nostri), allora un modello come quello di Lucrezia ha continuato a funzionare e ad essere riproposto proprio perché i valori, di cui questo mito era espressione, non hanno smesso di essere considerati validi.”
