Grazie al ripescaggio delle migliori terze ha potuto accedere alla fase ad eliminazione diretta, contro le big d’Europa. Ed ecco che le chance degli svizzeri iniziarono a vacillare quando venne sorteggiato il tabellone degli ottavi: i biancorossi pescano la Francia di Deschamps, vincitrice dell’ultimo mondiale e candidata numero uno alla vittoria finale. Ma nel calcio i miracoli avvengono con frequenze disarmanti, e dopo aver assaporato l’occasione del 2-0 su calcio di rigore, poi sbagliato da Rodriguez, i Les Bleus ribaltano la partita, portandosi sul 3-1. Quando tutto sembrava finito, Seferovic e Gavranovic decidono di autoproclamarsi eroi nazionali, segnando le reti che riportano in perfetta parità il match. La Francia disorientata e perplessa, viene trascinata di forza ai tempi supplementari, dove non riesce a concretizzare le palle gol. È il tempo dei rigori. Segnano tutti, tranne Kylian Mbappé: la Svizzera ha ufficialmente buttato fuori i campioni del mondo, e adesso può puntare ai quarti. Tutto il mondo del calcio è in visibilio, nessuno avrebbe mai scommesso su di loro. Ai quarti la squadra di Granit Xhaka affronta la Spagna, che va in vantaggio. Ancora una volta gli svizzeri non si perdono d’animo, e rimettono la partita in sesto grazie ad un gol di Shaqiri, ma stavolta ai rigori sono loro ad abbassare il capo: la Spagna vince 1-3 ai penalties, e sarà la prossima avversaria dell’Italia, che nel frattempo ha battuto Austria e Belgio.
Ma cosa ci ha lasciato? Di favole nel calcio ne abbiamo sentite raccontare parecchie, dall’Italia 2006, al Leicester di Ranieri fino alla recentissima Inter di Conte; la Svizzera non ha vinto l’Europeo, e non ci è andata nemmeno poi così vicina, ma ha dimostrato di saper credere nei propri sogni, lottando con le unghie e con i denti per raggiungerli. Quando l’Italia ha battuto l’Austria ai tempi supplementari, molti tifosi contestavano il fatto che gli azzurri non fossero riusciti a chiudere la partita prima, forse dimenticando che il pallone è rotondo, o che le partite si giocano in campo. La Svizzera è stato l’esempio lampante di come dedizione e coraggio possano essere talvolta superiori a qualsiasi pronostico. La Francia, campione del mondo, è forse meno forte degli undici di Petkovic? No, non lo è, ma ciò non toglie che a passare il turno sono stati gli svizzeri, carichi di volontà e forza d’animo. Così come alla vigilia di Belgio-Italia tutti ci davano per sfavoriti, come se la partita si fosse già giocata in incognito. Arriva il gol di Barella, poi quello di Insigne, e gli azzurri mandano a casa i red devils di De Bruyne e Lukaku, tanto sicuri di vincere. Ancora una volta accade il miracolo, e il pallone va dove deve andare. La Repubblica Ceca è un’altra squadra sorteggiata nelle migliori terze, finendo dietro ad Inghilterra e Croazia nel girone D, e che adesso vanta di aver buttato fuori l’Olanda. Così come la Danimarca, che dopo l’episodio di Eriksen si è fatta coraggio, e ha eliminato il Galles con un abbondante 4-0. Euro2020 non è solo un campionato europeo, è la rivincita che tutti stavano aspettando dopo un periodo buio che ha messo in ginocchio il mondo intero. Le squadre scendono in campo trascinate dai propri supporter, sapendo di star giocando più per loro che per gratificazioni personali. Ed ecco perché tutta Italia esplode ad ogni rete degli azzurri: il calcio è da sempre valvola di sfogo, e quest’anno da sfogare c’è tanto, troppo.
