Il suo ideatore fu Pierre De Coubertin, a cui dobbiamo le moderne olimpiadi, che volle rappresentare con cinque anelli intrecciati l’unione dei cinque continenti del mondo. Ad oggi è infatti consuetudine associare ogni colore ad uno specifico posto: Il rosso alle Americhe; il blu all’Europa; il nero all’Africa; il giallo all’Asia ed il verde all’Oceania. Questa particolare scelta cromatica deriva da un’attenta analisi delle bandiere nazionali dei paesi partecipanti dell’epoca, che possedevano tutti almeno uno di questi colori.
